Consistent Cobbers Finish 6th At MIAC Meet

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (10/07/13)—Concordia fired three rounds in the 330's at the MIAC Championship Meet at Bunker Hills GC and came away with a sixth-place finish. It is the second straight season that the Cobbers have placed sixth at the conference meet.

Concordia's best team round of the tournament came in the harshest conditions of the meet. CC fired 337 in both the first and third rounds but they shot a 331 on Sunday in a round played during off-and-on rain and blustery wind patterns. The 331 ties for the lowest single-round team score shot by the Cobbers since the championship meet was moved to Bunker Hills in 2006.

Concordia didn't have a golfer finish in the top 15 at the MIAC Meet but had three golfers place in the top 25 and all five CC athletes finished in the top 30 at the meet.

Junior Katie Nelson was the low Concordia golfer at the meet. She recovered from a tough start on Saturday and then went 81-80 in the second and third rounds to finish with a total of 251 and come home in a tie for 20th place. Nelson was also the top CC finisher last year when she fired a 255. The 251 is the best score for Nelson in her three conference championship meets.

Amy Mireault and Kara Meslow were close behind Nelson. Both players tied with a final total of 254 and placed in a tie for 24th place but both took different routes to get to the final total. Mireault had one of the best rounds of the tournament by any golfer in the field as she posted a 78 in the second round under the tough-weather conditions. Her score was the third best of the round and she was one of only eight golfers at the whole championship to break 80 on Sunday. Mireault's 78 was the best single-round score at an MIAC Meet since 2008 when Afton Pender also fired a 78 and wound up as the runner-up at the meet.  Mireault had an 87 in round 1 and then closed with an 89 on Monday. Meslow rode the consistent train to her top 25 finish. She shot three rounds within three shots of one another (83-86-85) and had her best round on Saturday.

Kristi Opatz was the most consistent of any Cobber golfer for the three days. She had an 86 sandwiched in between a pair of 85's. Her final total of 256 was good for a tie for 28th place. Hayley Johnson led Concordia after day 1 when she shot an 82 but then slid back with an 88 and 87 (257) and placed in a tie for the No.30 spot.
