Steady Improvement Continues At Blazer Invite

SARTELL, Minn. (9/22/13)—Concordia improved on their team score for the third straight round in the final round of the Blazer Invite at Blackberry Ridge GC on Sunday. The Cobbers fired a final-round team score of 337 and finished fourth.

Concordia opened the tournament on Saturday with a score of 346 and did that nine shots better as they continue to lower their team scores heading towards the MIAC Championship Meet. The 346 in the first round was one shot better than their total in the one-day event at UM-Morris on Thursday.

In addition to team improvement, the Cobbers also showed individual improvement. All six players that participated in the Blazer Invite tied or bettered their score from round 1 to round 2. Junior Amy Mireault led Concordia for the entire meet. She was three shots better on Sunday, fired an 80 and placed in a tie for sixth place with a two-day total of 163 (83-80).

Mireault was one of five Cobbers who all shot in the 80's on Sunday. The biggest improvement from Saturday to Sunday was turned in by Kara Meslow who shot an 85 on day 2 after coming home in 92 in the opener. Meslow finished in a tie for 26th place at 178.

Two other Cobber golfers finished in the top 20 and both golfers shot identical scores in each round. Hayley Johnson was consistent at 85, finished at 170 and was all alone in 12th place. Kristi Opatz posted back-to-back 86's and was tied for 16th at 172.

Katie Nelson was the fifth CC athlete to shoot in the 80's on Sunday. She improved by five shots from her opening round and went 93-88 to tie for 31st place.

Concordia will have one more meet before the conference championship. The Cobbers will participate in the Gustavus Fall Invitational on Sept. 28-29 at the Le Sueur Country Club.
