Rain Can't Dampen Cobber Tournament Weekend

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (9/08/13)—The annual Concordia golf tournament weekend was shortened to only two rounds because of rain that swept through the area on Saturday night but that didn't dampen the play of the Cobbers.

Concordia finished in seventh place in the Cobber Open on Friday and then placed in a tie for sixth place in the rain shortened Concordia Invite on Saturday. Katie Nelson and Kristi Opatz traded low rounds for CC over the weekend.

In Friday's Cobber Open, a meet that featured NCAA Division I, II and III schools as well as top NAIA teams, Concordia shot a team total of 327. The Cobbers had three golfers finish in the 80's and were led by Nelson who carded a season-best 77. Her 5-over-par score was good for a top 10 finish at the highly competitive meet. She finished in a tie for ninth place and was one of only two Division III golfers in the top 10. Nelson's 77 is also the lowest score by a Cobber in two years. Her low last season was an 81 at the Mustang Invite.

Amy Mireault and Opatz shot 81's and placed in the top 25. Their solid rounds pushed them into a tie for 22nd place. Emily Frosaker was the final member of Concordia to have a scoring round. She shot an 88 and was tied for 49th place.

Saturday's event featured 11 schools and 87 golfers. Concordia braved the scorching temperatures and shot a final team total of 327 to finish in a tie for sixth place. CC was only nine shots out of second place.

Opatz backed up her 81 on Friday with a 79 on Saturday and claimed her first top 10 finish of the season. Like Nelson on Friday, she finished in a tie for ninth place. Opatz' 79 was four shots better than any round she had in all of 2012-13. Mireault and Nelson were three shots back with 82's. They were just outside the top 25 in a tie for 26th place. Dana Meslow carded the other scoring round for the Cobbers. She came home in 84 and finished in the top 40.

Concordia will now hit the road and compete in the Division III Classic hosted by Carleton at The Jewel GC on Sept. 14-15.
