Cobbers Fire Best Two-Round Total Of The Season
MARSHALL, Minn. (9/25/11)—Concordia was
unable to duplicate Saturday's season-best score of 315 and
finished in seventh place at the Southwest Minnesota State Invite
on Sunday. The Cobbers finished with a final total of 654 which is
CC's best two-round tournament total of the season.
For the fifth straight tournament Concordia was led by a
first-year player. Kristi Opatz took low Cobber
honors at the SMSU Invite. She carded a season-best 79 on Saturday
and then followed it up with an 81 in the final round. Her
two-round total of 160 was good for a tie for 16th
place. Opatz currently leads the team in scoring average in 2011.
She now has an 83.0 average on the year.
The Cobbers had two other golfers finish in the top 20 at the
tournament. Molly Zavadil was one shot behind
Opatz with a 161. Like Opatz, she shot a season-best score on
Saturday but then dropped off the pace on Sunday. Her 78 in the
first round helped drop her season average to 84.8. She is now
third on the team this year.
The top round of the tournament for Concordia was fired by
Holly Karkela who posted a season-best 76 on
Saturday. It is the lowest score for a CC player since the 2008
season when Afton Pender carded a 75 at the Red
River Invitational. Karkela is now second on the team in scoring
this year. She lowered her average to 84.5.
Concordia will be looking to carry their recent success over to
the MIAC Championship Meet. The Cobbers will compete in the
conference meet on Oct. 1-3 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon
Rapids, Minn.
