Tough Times In St. Peter

ST. PETER, Minn. (2/27/21)---Things went from bad to worse in the Cobbers' game at Gustavus on Saturday, After trailing 36-20 at the half, Concordia was outscored 19-3 in the third quarter and wound up losing 74-42 to the Gusties.

The Cobbers were outscored by eight points in each of the first two quarters to trail by 16 at the break. CC then went 1-for-12 from the floor and 0-for-5 from outside the arc in the third quarter as they were outscored by the same margin from the first two quarters combined.

Junior Mary Sem led all players with 21 points as she accounted for 50.0% of the team's total scoring. She went 6-for-9 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free throw line.

GAME RECAP: Concordia never led in the game as Gustavus scored the first four points of the opening quarter and 14 of the first 18. The Cobbers cut the margin to six points when freshman Megan Haugo hit a 3-pointer with 1:28 left in the opening period. The Gusties then finished the quarter with a pair of free throws and the recorded seven of the first nine points in the second quarter.

The Cobbers came out in the second half and scored three of the first five points of the half. Things would take a turn for the worst immediately following Sem's jumper from inside the paint. Gustavus proceeded to go on a 17-0 run to finish the quarter, while the Cobbers missed their last nine shots of the period.

Concordia recovered in the fourth quarter. The two teams tied with 19 points each in the final 10 minutes of play. The Cobbers were 6-for-16 from the field in the fourth quarter and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

A TRIO OF 20'S: Sem's 21-point afternoon marked the third time in the last four games she has scored at least 20 points. She had 20 against St. Benedict and 23 at home vs. Bethel. Sem averaged 17.5 points per game in those four games which upped her overall season average to a team-leading 15.0 ppg.

IT'S FROSTY OUTSIDE: Concordia shot a season-low 15.0% (3-for-20) from outside the arc on Saturday. The Cobbers are a combined 7-for-40 (17.5%) from 3-point range in the last two games – both of which were losses. In their 2-game win streak before the last two games, CC hit 11 of their 30 (36.6%) shots from outside the arc.

NUMBER CRUNCH: Concordia finished the game on Saturday by shooting 27.5% (14-for-51) from the floor and were 11-for-15 (73.3%) from the free throw line. The Gusties connected on 45.8% (27-for-79) of their shots from the field, 28.0% (7-for-25) from distance and 68.4% (13-for-19) from the foul line.

The Cobbers turned the ball over a season-high 20 times which led to a 18-7 advantage for Gustavus in points off of turnovers.

MEGAN MAKES IT ON THE BOARD: Freshman Megan Haugo scored her first collegiate points on Saturday. After not scoring in the past two games, she connected on a 3-pointer in the first quarter and then added a field goal and a free throw in the second quarter to finish with six points. Her six points were second most on the team.

UP NEXT: Concordia is scheduled to play three road games in a span of four days at the back end of next week. The Cobbers will play at Augsburg on Thursday, Mar. 4 and then travel to Winona to take on St. Mary's on back-to-back days on Mar. 6-7.
