40-Minute Game In 38 Seconds

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/29/20)---When sophomore guard Autumn Thompson converted the free throw on an old fashioned 3-point play, Concordia's game at Carleton was tied for the 10th time at 49-49 with 38-seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Knights then scored four of the final five points to come away with a 53-50 win.

Carleton was able to get to the free throw line on their next possession after the 49-49 tie score and made one of two free throws. The Knights then came up with the biggest offensive rebound of the game and then converted one of two free throws to take a 51-49 lead.

Concordia was fouled on its next possession and made one of their two free throws to bring the game to within one point but a pair of Carleton free throws with 3-seconds remaining sealed the win. The Cobbers had one last look at tying the game but a 3-point attempt fell off the mark.

The loss was Concordia's second straight after having won two straight and drops their overall record to 7-10 on the year. CC is now 5-7 in MIAC play and is still in possession of sixth place in the conference standings. Carleton extends its win streak to two games and is now 7-11 overall and 4-9 in the MIAC. The Knights are 6-5 at home this season.

The game was a grinding affair with 11 lead changes and the 10 tie scores. Neither team had more than a 6-point lead in the 40 minutes of play. The Cobbers' 6-point lead came at the end of the third quarter while Carleton's largest margin came at the end of the first half.

The fourth quarter was the closest of the contest as neither team was able to post more than a 3-point lead and the lead changes hands five times.

Neither team shot the ball very well. Concordia connected on 38.0% (19-for-50) of their shots from the floor and 28.6% (6-for-21) of their attempts from long range. Carleton shot 27.3% (15-for-55) from the floor and 13.8% (4-for-29) from 3-point range.

Like the men's game, the biggest stat difference came at the free throw line. The Cobbers attempted 17 fewer foul shots and made 13 less foul shots. CC was 6-for-8 (75.0%) from the line as compared to 19-for-25 (76.0%) for the Knights.

Concordia held a 36-34 edge in rebounds and both teams had 20 points in the paint.

Thompson led a trio of Cobber starters who finished with at least 10 points in the game. Thompson made four of the six 3-pointers for CC and finished with 15 points. It is her fifth straight game in double figures for scoring and upped her season scoring average to 12.6 ppg.

Mary Sem had her fourth straight double-digit scoring game and finished with 10 points and added three assists.

Sophomore Bailee Larson had 10 points and a game-high 11 points to record the second double-double of her career. She has led Concordia in rebounds in four straight games, has grabbed at least seven rebounds in five of the last six games and leads the team in rebounds with a 6.4 rpg average. Larson is averaging 7.1 rebounds per conference game which is sixth best in the MIAC.        
   
INSIDE STAT INFO: Autumn Thompson made four 3-pointers in the game and now has 44 for the season. Her 44 made shots from outside the arc is tied for 11th most on the school's single-season 3-point list. Cathy Johnson holds the school record for 3-pointers made in a season. She knocked down 71 long balls in the 1991 season.     

INSIDE STAT INFO II: The 53-50 final score marked the lowest combined point total (103) in a single game for the Cobbers this season. It was also the second time in the last three games that neither team scored more than 55 points in a game (Jan. 22 vs. St. Benedict/53-52).   

UP NEXT: Concordia gets a break from the road as they will two straight home games. The Cobbers will face St. Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. The Cardinals are 2-16 overall and 2-11 in the MIAC but are coming off a 77-57 win at Macalester on Wednesday.
