An Oreo Special At Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/08/20)---If Concordia's game at Macalester was a cookie it would definitely be an Oreo. The Cobbers used the sweet cream filling of the middle two quarters to beat the Scots 71-59.

Concordia outscored Macalester 40-27 in the second and third quarters, hung on down the stretch and beat the Scots to end a 2-game losing skid.

The Cobbers are now 5-7 in all games and 3-4 in conference play. CC is now in sixth place in the MIAC standings. Macalester drops to 1-11 in all games and continues to look for its first conference win as they are now 0-7 in league games.

Concordia led for 34 of the 40 minutes of the game and never trailed after the first quarter. The teams traded baskets with the game tied, or Macalester holding the lead, for the first 7-minutes of the first quarter. The Cobbers tied the game for the fifth time on a layup from Rachel Hoernemann with 3:45 left in the opening period. Autumn Thompson then made one of two free throws at the 2:42 mark to give CC a 13-12 lead – a lead they would never relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Concordia pushed a 4-point lead after one quarter to nine points by scoring the first five points of the second period.  The Cobbers led by 11 at the half at 38-27 and pushed the lead to 17 points after three quarters.

Concordia scored 40 points in the middle 20 minutes of play by going 17-for-36 (47.2%) from the floor, 3-for-7 from outside the arc and outrebounding the Scots 26-19.

The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 44.3% (27-for-61) from the floor and 33.3% (4-for-12) from 3-point range. CC also outrebounded Macalester 46-37.

Concordia had five players with at least nine points in the game and had three players in double digits. Freshman Emily Beseman had a team-high 14 points and was 2-for-3 from outside the arc. She also had seven rebounds.

Junior Elizabeth Birkemeyer put up 12 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Sophomore Bailee Larson recorded her first career double-double. She went 3-for-5 from the floor, 5-for-6 from the free throw line and had 11 points. Larson also came away with a game-high 10 rebounds.

INSIDE STAT INFO: One of the keys for the Cobbers was to rotate players through the game and wear down the Scots. CC used 11 players in the game, had nine players put up two points and held a decisive 31-17 advantage in points from non-starters.           

UP NEXT: Concordia will return to St. Paul on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they square off against St. Catherine at 3 p.m. The Wildcats are a similar 5-7 in all games and are 2-5 in the MIAC. SCU is coming off a 67-58 win at St. Benedict on Wednesday.
