Senior Day Statement

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/17/18)---It wasn't for a spot in the playoffs but it was a statement for next year. Concordia cruised past St. Olaf in the season finale to win their third straight and fifth in the final seven games of 2018.

The Cobbers used their outside shooting skills to come away with a 74-54 win over the Oles.

The victory pushed the Cobbers into a three-way tie for the final spot in the MIAC tournament but lost out on the complicated tie-breaking mathematical formula.

Concordia finishes the season with an 11-14 overall record and an 8-10 mark in league play. The two win totals are three better than last year's overall and conference records.

The Cobbers treated the Senior Celebration Day crowd to some early fireworks as they scored 13 of the first 15 points in the game and went 3-for-4 from 3-point range during that stretch.

Concordia would stretch the lead to 18 points by the end of the first quarter. CC shot 66.9% (9-for-13) from the floor and 55.6% (5-for-9) in the first 10 minutes of play. The Cobber defense also held the Oles to 37.5% (3-for-8) shooting from the floor and didn't allow a successful 3-pointer while forcing the Oles into six turnovers.

The Cobbers put the game out of reach at the end of the first half when they went on a 14-3 run and grabbed a 24-point lead at the halftime break.

Concordia spread the wealth on the scoresheet as nine different players scored and eight had at least five points. The team's leading scorer Grace Wolhowe capped her junior season by posting a team-best 15 points. She also dished out six dimes.

Lincoln Haiby, playing in her last game as a Cobber, went for 13 points and two rebounds. Mira Ellefson came off the bench to score 11 points and haul down a team-high five rebounds.

The Cobbers shot 48.1% (26-for-54) from the floor and 40.0% (12-for-30) from outside the arc for the game. CC held a 35-29 edge in rebounds for the game.

STAT ADVANTAGE: St. Olaf held a 21-17 edge in points in the paint but it was the Cobbers' ability to knock down the long ball that proved to be the difference. CC made 12 3-pointers as opposed to only five for the Oles.   

LONG-RANGE LADIES: Concordia made at least 10 "treys" for the second straight game. They made 10 against Hamline on Wednesday in a 65-49 win. The Cobbers finished the year by making at least 10 3-pointers in six games. CC went 5-1 in those contests.

DOUBLE-DIGIT GRACE: Grace Wolhowe finished the year as the team's leading scorer. She was the only CC player to average in double figures. Wolhowe averaged a career-high 11.0 points in the 25 games. She also scored at least 10 points in 13 games.  

WHAT DO THEY KNOW: Concordia had the biggest jump in the final standings from their predicted finish in the preseason coaches' poll. The league's coaches selected the Cobbers to finish 10th in the final standings but CC proved that prognostication wrong by four spots as they tied for sixth. The four-spot jump was the biggest of any team in the MIAC.
