Punished In The Paint

Moorhead, Minn. (1/15/18)---Concordia was unable to stop Bethel around the basket and lost 78-63.

The Cobbers gave up at least 20 points in three of the four quarters and fell by 15 in a game that was originally scheduled to be played on Dec. 4 but was postponed due to weather issues.

The Cobbers fell behind by 11 points after the first quarter after the Royals went on a 11-5 run to finish the period. Bethel scored 23 points in the first and second frames and then added 20 points in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory.

The difference in the game came in Bethel's ability to get into the lane and make shots from inside five feet. Concordia only had one fewer field goal attempt in the game (56-55) but made 12 fewer field goals. The Royals held a decided 52-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Bethel was also able to turn Cobber miscues into points on the board. CC only committed three more turnovers in the game but Bethel held a 32-13 edge in points off of turnovers.

Concordia (5-10/2-6 MIAC) finished the game by shooting 36.4% (20-for-55) from the floor and 37.5% (6-for-16) from 3-point range. The Royals' inside game contributed to a 57.1% (32-for-56) shooting mark from the floor. BU made 41.7% (5-for-12) of their shots from outside the arc.

Both teams had 33 rebounds in the game.

The Cobbers had four of their five starting players score at least nine points. Junior Grace Wolhowe had a team-high 14 points and also led the team in assists with three.

Cassidy Rahman went 4-for-6 from the floor and finished with 11 points. She was 2-for-3 from long range including a buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter which brought the Cobbers to within 10 points at 58-48.

Kirstin Simmons and Amber Lingen both had nine points in the game. Simmons added a team-high eight rebounds while Lingen went 3-for-4 from the free throw line.

FREE THROW SHOOTING: Concordia made 17 free throws in the game which marks the third straight game CC has made more than 15 foul shots in a game. The Cobbers have made over 15 free throws in seven games this season and lead the MIAC in free throws made per conference game.      

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia with their three-game week when they play at St. Catherine on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are a similar 2-6 in conference play and are 6-9 overall. SCU has lost three straight and is coming off a 64-57 defeat at Hamline on Wednesday.
