Fourth Quarter Fanatics

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/22/16) --- Concordia let an 11-point halftime lead slip down to two points in the third quarter but then used a 23-point fourth period to beat St. Scholastica 60-47.

The Cobbers made their final five free throws and 9-of-10 from the foul line in the final quarter to seal their second win of the season. Concordia is now 2-2 on the year while the Saints fall to 0-3.

Concordia scored nine of the first 11 points in the opening quarter of play in a game where they led for the final 36:06. The score was tied at 2-2 before CC rattled off seven straight to seize control of the contest.

The Cobbers led by four after one period and then scored the final five points of the second quarter to take a 31-20 advantage into the break. St. Scholastica cut the lead to two points on a pair of occasions in the second period but each time Concordia responded on the very next possession with points from players inside the paint.

Concordia struggled in the third quarter. They only made one field goal in the first nine minutes of play and shot 20.0% (2-for-10) from the floor in the 10-minute period.

The Saints cut the lead to two points at 34-32 with 59-seconds remaining in the quarter but then a Cassidy Rahman 3-pointer on the next possession pushed the lead to five at the end of the period.

Concordia then scored seven of the first 11 points and 14 of the first 20 to take a double-digit lead at 51-40 with 3:49 to play in the game. CC would then seal the win on the free throw line.

The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 42.6% (20-for-47) from the floor and 25.0% (3-for-12) from outside the arc. St. Scholastica was at 35.6% (19-for-52) from the floor and 18.8% (3-for-16) from 3-point range,

Concordia had three of its five starting players finish in double figures. Senior Greta Walsh led all players with 15 points. Sophomore Grace Wolhowe had 12 points on a 5-for-9 shooting day and Jenna Januschka scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

FOURTH QUARTER FANATICS: The 23 points scored in the fourth quarter is the most by the Cobbers in any period this season. Concordia scored 21 points in two different quarters earlier in the year and both of those came in the fourth quarter. CC has now scored 77 points in the fourth quarter which is the most of any period this season. The fourth quarter was also the highest scoring quarter during last season.

SURPRISINGLY SIMMONS: Concordia sophomore Kirstin Simmons had five rebounds against the Saints. She has now put together back-to-back-to-back games of at least five rebounds. She is currently tied for second on the team in rebounds with 21. Simmons had 21 rebounds in all of last season.         

TURNOVER TALK: Concordia committed a season-low 12 turnovers against St. Scholastica. The previous season low was 18. The Cobbers have had a combined 31 miscues in their two wins while they have coughed the ball up 42 times in their two losses.

WHAT'S NEXT? Concordia will take a plain ride to the Rocky Mountain State after the Thanksgiving holiday. The Cobbers will head to Colorado College to participate in the Rocky Mountain Classic on Friday and Saturday. CC will play Ozarks (Ark.) on Friday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. and then square off against Elmhurst on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. The Eagles are 2-2 on the year while the Blue Jays are unbeaten at 4-0.
