Gales Of November Come Early

SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/20/19)---"The gales of November" came early in Concordia's non-conference game at Wis.-Superior. The Cobbers could never recover from a nine-turnover, 1-for-9 shooting performance in the first quarter and lost 59-47 by the big lake they called 'gitche gumee'.

Concordia didn't connect on its first field goal of the game until seven minutes into the opening period of play. The Cobbers dug themselves a 10-2 hole to start the game and could never recover as they lost for the second straight game.

The Cobbers are now 1-2 on the season while the Yellowjackets win for the first time on the year and move to 1-2 as well.

Concordia spent most of the second and third quarters trying to chase Superior and was never able to put together an extended streak of points. The Cobbers cut the lead to three points late in the second quarter but then the Yellowjackets responded with a 4-0 run to end the half to take a 29-22 lead into the break.

Concordia outscored Superior 12-12 in the third quarter but could never get closer than six points in the 10-minute period. CC's final run at Superior came towards the midway point of the final quarter when they went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to five points at 46-41. Senior guard Greta Walsh scored four of the six points in that stretch.

After a Grace Wolhowe steal on the Yellowjackets' next possession, the Cobbers would have a chance to cut the lead to just two points but a missed layup turned into a 3-pointer at the Superior end and the lead was back to eight points with 2:16 left to play.

Walsh led Concordia's offense on the day. She went 7-for-14 from the floor and finished with a team-high 18 points. She was the only CC player in double figures for the game.

Freshman guard Lexi Nelson hit a clutch 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter to bring the Cobbers within six at 41-35. She finished with a season-high nine points and went 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Crystal Amundson came away with a team-high six rebounds and also had six points.

The two biggest statistical differences in the game came on the free throw line and in the turnover department. Concordia went 12-for-16 from the foul stripe which was in sharp contrast to the Yellowjackets who went 21-for-29 .

The Cobbers committed a season-high 24 turnovers in the game and Superior turned those two dozen miscues into 15 points. Superior only had 11 turnovers for the game.

SMOOTH SAILING:
Senior Greta Walsh has been on a three-game tear to start the season. She has scored at least 14 points in all three games and has a combined 42 points in the last two games. Walsh is averaging 18.7 points per game this year which is fourth best in the MIAC this year. Last year Walsh averaged 13.0 points per game which was a career high.

GRACE GIVEN: Grace Wolhowe recorded a season-high four assists against Superior. She led all players in the game. He four helpers are the most by any CC player in a game this year.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will play its second straight Lake Superior team on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when they host St. Scholastica at 5 p.m. The Saints are 0-2 on the season and are coming off a 71-52 loss against Buena Vista on Saturday.
