Second Verse Better Than The First

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/14/15)—The second verse was much better than first. Concordia used a game's worth of experience to beat Minn.-Morris 69-58 in the second game of the season.

The Cobbers used a 10-0 streak to start the game to gain control and never looked back as they beat the Cougars for the fifth straight time.

Concordia faltered for stretches in the opener on Friday, getting outscored 54-45 in the second half in a nine-point loss to Wis.-Superior. On Saturday, Concordia outscored 24-22 in the final two quarters, limited the Cougars to 22.6% (7-for-31) shooting from the field in the second half and cruised to the 11-point win.

Jenna Januschka continues to be the story for Concordia in the early stages of the 2015-16 season. On Friday she poured in a career-high 13 points. She did that total nine better as she recorded her first 20-point game in her two-plus seasons at CC. Januschka went 8-for-14 from the floor, 5-for-6 from the free throw line and finished with 22 points. Her size and speed game the Morris defense fits all night long in the pain area.

The other big story in the game was Concordia's defense. Less than 24 hours after allowing Superior to shoot 48.1% from the floor and 54.5% from outside the arc. The Cobbers put the grips on the Cougars offense and held Morris to 34.4% (21-for-61) shooting from the field and 33.3% (6-for-18) shooting from 3-point range.

The Cobber defense also came up with more steals and a bigger rebounding advantage on Saturday. On Friday CC forced only four turnovers and held a plus-6 rebounding edge. Against Morris, CC made the Cougars cough up the ball 15 times and had a plus-19 advantage on the glass.

Junior guard Greta Walsh came up with 17 points on a 5-for-14 shooting game. She also had a trio of 3-point baskets as she tied the second highest single game point total of her career.

Senior Olivia Johnson backed up her double-double performance on Friday with a 12-rebound game vs. Morris.

Cobber freshman Jamie Mentzer came off the bench to go 3-for-7 from the floor and score eight points.        

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will head west for a pair of games in California. The Cobbers will face Augustana (Ill.) and host UC Santa Cruz in the Santa Cruz Tournament on Nov. 20 and 21.
