19-0 First-Half Streak Grounds Gusties

MOORHEAD, MInn. (2/11/15)—Concordia scored the first seven points in their game against Gustavus, built a 20-point lead in the opening 14 minutes of play and coasted to a 72-59 win.

Concordia held Gustavus to just 25.0% (6-for-24) shooting from the floor and without a made basket from outside the arc (0-for-3) as they built a 39-19 lead and then didn't let the Gusties get to within 15 points for most of the second half.

Alley Fisher and Erin Januschka combined for 33 points in the huge conference win for the Cobbers. Fisher was 7-for-13 from the floor and had 17 points while Januschka was 7-for-11 from the field and added 16 points.

The win takes Concordia from a tie for fifth place into a three-way tie for third place. The Cobbers are now 9-6 in conference play and 13-9 overall. Gustavus drops into the tie for third place with Concordia and is an identical 9-6 in the MIAC. The Gusties fall to 15-7 overall.

The key stretch of the game came at the 11-minute mark of the first half. Gustavus cut the lead to a single point at 9-8 but then Concordia scored 19 straight points in a span of 4:52 to take a 20-point lead at 28-8 with 6:08 to play in the opening period of play. During the 19-0 streak, Concordia went 5-for-7 from the field, 6-for-6 from the free throw line and had seven different players score.

From that point forward it was a matter of Concordia not giving up any big streaks and making shots on a consistent basis. The Cobbers were able to make 61.9% (13-for-21) of their shots from the floor in the second half.

The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 53.1% (26-for-49) from the field marking the second time in the last three games that CC has shot better than 52.5% from the floor. Concordia connected on 42.1% (8-for-19) of their shots from outside the arc which is also the second time in the past three games they have shot better than 40,0% from 3-point range.

Concordia had eight players with at least four points in the game. In addition to the 33 combined points from Fisher and Januschka, Hannah Jeske made a career-high three shots from outside the arc and had 11 points.

Fisher and Olivia Johnson both had six assists on the night as the Cobbers had 15 helpers on the game. CC has now had at least 15 assists in three straight games. Johnson also had eight rebounds and four points.

Concordia will now host unbeaten St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. The Tommies are currently ranked second in the latest D3hoops.com poll.
