Timely Timeout Tips Game

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/31/15)—Concordia used a well-timed timeout to shake off an offensive malaise midway through the second half and went on to cruise past Macalester 62-44. The Cobbers went on a 16-2 run in a span of 8:28 after the timeout in the final period to break free from the Scots and earn their third win in the last four games.

In addition to the instant offense in the second half, the Cobbers used a stifling defense to limit Macalester to 29.2% (14-for-48) shooting from the floor and 25.0% (4-for-16) from outside the arc.

The win keeps Concordia in the race for one of the top 4 spots in the league standings. CC is now 7-5 in conference play and in a three-way tie for third place. The Cobbers move their overall mark to 11-8 on the year.

The Cobbers were never able to get clear of Macalester in the first half. Concordia never trailed in the game and bolted to a 15-point lead at the midway point of the opening period but then the Scots whittled the margin to seven points at the break by going on a 9-2 run to end the half.

The game was still hanging in the balance when a Macalester jumper in the paint cut the margin to five points at 35-30 with 14:30 to play.

Cobber head coach Jessica Rahman then called timeout and rallied the team with an intense plea for consistent play on both ends of the court. The impassioned speech paid off as Concordia went on the decisive 16-2 run and put the game away with a 17-point lead at 47-30 with 8:51 to play.

Concordia shot around 45.0% from the floor in each half. CC finished the game by shooting 46.0% (23-for-30) from the field and 26.7% (4-for-15) from outside the arc.

Erin Januschka was the only player on either team to score more than 10 points in the game. She finished with 14 points after going 6-for-8 from the floor. Alley Fisher was 5-for-6 from the free throw line and had eight points while Olivia Johnson had a game-high seven rebounds to go along with six points.  Johnson then went over to the Cobber Duals track and field meet where she placed third in the shot put.
