27-Minute Game Of Catch-Up Takes Its Toll

27-Minute Game Of Catch-Up Takes Its Toll

TACOMA, Wash. (11/22/14)—Concordia played catch-up for almost the entire first half and then the first seven minutes of the second period before tying the game with Puget Sound. However, the 27-minute chase took its toll on the Cobbers and they were outscored 14-6 in the final six minutes of play and lost 68-57 to the Loggers.

The game was the championship contest in the Doug McArthur Classic hosted by Puget Sound. Concordia beat Pacific Lutheran on Friday while the Loggers bested St. Benedict.

The 11-point loss ends a two-game win streak for CC. The Cobbers see their season record evened at 2-2. Puget Sound wins for the fourth straight time and remains perfect in 2014. UPS is now 4-0 on the year.

The game was played at an up-tempo pace by two teams who wanted to push the ball quickly up the floor and then pressure the other squad on defense. The shot clock rarely got under 10 seconds on either end of the court for the entire game as both offenses were content on taking advantage of fast break numbers-up situations or shooting off of the first or second pass in the set offense.

Both teams took over 50 shots from the field and both were cold from outside the arc. The Cobber shot 37.7% (20-for-53) from the floor while the Loggers connected on 46.4% (26-for-56) of their shots from the field.  Neither team shot above 30.0% from 3-point range. CC was 5-for-17 (29.4%) from outside the arc and UPS was 3-for-13 (23.1%).

One of the biggest differences in the game was scoring around the basket. Puget Sound outscored Concordia 30-20 in points in the paint.

Concordia had five players score at least nine points in the game. Erin Januschka led CC for the second straight game. She had 16 points and added a team-high eight rebounds. Alley Fisher finished with 13 points and also had three assists and two steals.

The Cobbers had a trio of players finish with nine points. Olivia Johnson had nine points while Emma Peterson was 4-for-7 from the floor and also had nine points. Erin Januschka's sister Jenna had a career-high nine points.

Concordia will play their final non-conference game before the start of the MIAC slate when they play at Minn.-Morris on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
