Fisher Leads Free Throw Frenzy At Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/04/12)--Concordia led from wire-to-wire and rolled over Carleton 74-66 in Northfield on Saturday. The Cobbers scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back as they won for the third straight game and sixth time in the last seven contests.

Concordia stays locked in a tie for third place in the MIAC standings. The Cobbers are now 14-7 overall and 12-6 in the MIAC. The Knights fall to 2-19 in all games and 1-17 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers shot 49.0% from the floor but only 14.3% from outside the arc while Carleton was 24-for-54 (44.4%) from the field and 6-for-13 (46.2%) from 3-point range. Concordia won the game on the free throw line where they went 23-for-35 (65.7%) as compared to only 12-for-17 (70.6%) for the Knights. 

Concordia's early-game run set the tone for the rest of the game. The Cobbers upped their 9-0 lead to a 19-2 margin and the Knights could never recover. Carleton was able to get to within four points late in the first half with a 7-0 run but a layup from Tricia Sorensen and a pair of free throws from Emily Thesing gave CC a 36-30 lead at the half. CC led by double digits form most of the second half. The Knights were able to get within eight in the final minute of play to finish off the game.      

Concordia had three players finish in double figures and were led by freshman Alley Fisher who was 11-for-13 from the foul line and had a team-high 19 points. Sorensen continued her streak of 15-plus point games and finished with 18 points. She has now scored at least 15 points in three straight games and six of the past seven. Thesing added 12 points and six rebounds. Erika Jossart had five steals and Mary-Michael Vance came away with three assists. 

Carleton was led by Akemi Arzouman who was 7-for-14 from the floor, 8-for-9 from the foul line and collected a game-high 23 points. Jessa Yousa had 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Concordia will now have a third-place showdown with St. Olaf on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5:45 p.m. in Moorhead.  The Cobbers and Oles are tied in the conference standings with identical 12-6 marks.
