Gavin Earns NFCA All-Region Honors

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/26/21)---Concordia pitcher Megan Gavin (Cold Spring, Minn.) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Midwest All-Region Second Team.

Gavin becomes the first Cobber player to earn All-Region honors since 2002 when Jill Pontius was named the All-Region First Team. Gavin is only the fifth player in program history to receive an All-Region award.

The awards salute student-athletes from the Association's eight NCAA regions with first, second and third-team honors. NFCA member coaches voted on the teams in their respective regions, and all honorees are eligible for selection to the 2021 NFCA Division III All-America squads. This year's eight squads are comprised of a total of 308 student-athletes from 134 programs.

Gavin had a record-setting year for Concordia. She broke the school record for strikeouts in a single season and also eclipsed the program's record for strikeouts in a career during the year. Gavin finished 2021 with 226 Ks in her 149.0 innings pitched. Her 226 strikeouts during the season pushed her career total to 503. Gavin is the first pitcher in Cobber history to eclipse the 500-strikeout mark.

Gavin's All-Region honors caps a season where she was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team for the first time in her career. It was the second time she had earned a conference postseason award.

Gavin also became the first player in school history to be named the NFCA DIII National Pitcher of the Week. She earned that award on Mar. 31 after she appeared in four games, pitched in 17.1 innings, didn't allow an earned run and struck out 36 batters.

Gavin helped the Cobbers earn their first-ever playoff berth. Concordia finished in sixth place in the final league standings which captured a spot in the MIAC playoff play-in game. Gavin then helped the Cobbers record another milestone as she pitched a 2-hit, complete-game shutout against St. Ben's as Concordia came through with a 2-0 win in the playoff opener. It marked the first time in program history that the Cobbers won a postseason game.

Gavin's standout play in the circle also helped Concordia tie the school record for wins in a single season. CC finished with a 22-21 record which tied the 2000 Cobber team which went 22-19.

Gavin finished her outstanding season with a 10-12 record and had a 1.74 earned run average. She appeared in 25 of the team's 43 games and pitched in 149.0 innings. Gavin had a WHIP (walks + hits/innings pitched) of 1.00 and came away with an 8.17 average strikeouts in seven innings.
