Make It 4 Straight In The MIAC

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/21)---Concordia got a late game-winning run in the first game and then exploded for 11 runs in Game 2 to sweep Macalester 3-2 and 11-5.

The two wins on the day make it four straight for the Cobbers who have posted back-to-back conference sweeps for the first time since the 2007 season. Concordia ups its 2021 seas on record to 16-12 overall and 4-6 in the MIAC.

Megan Gavin pitched all 7.0 innings in Game 1 and gave up two runs, both of which came in the fifth, six hits and struck out nine.

The Cobbers scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 2-0 lead before the Scots tied the opener in the fifth. CC won the game on a Landry Maragos 2-out single that scored Kenzie Leither after Leither singled to start the inning and stole second base.

Concordia outhit Macalester 7-6 in the first game. There were only two extra-base hits in the game with each team posting a double. Maragos recorded the only CC non-single when she connected on a pitch in the fourth frame, sent it to left field and beat the throw to second base. Her fourth double of the season plated Leither who singled earlier in the inning.

Leither and Maragos were the only two Cobber players with more than one hit in Game 1.

The Cobbers were outhit 13-7 in Game 2 but collected eight walks, hit .400 (6-for-15) with runners in scoring position and .350 (7-for-20) with runners on base as they rolled to the 6-run win.

The big inning came in the third when Concordia scored six times on only two hits. They collected four of their free passes in the inning and were helped by three wild pitches. Drew Syverson had the biggest hit of the inning. She had a 2-out single to left field that scored Hannah Wilke and Amy Quast after both Wilke and Quast posted RBI hits earlier in the frame.

Syverson led the Cobber offense in Game 2. She went 2-for-3 and had three RBI. Kate Wensloff and Taylor Erholtz collected the other multiple-hit games for CC.

Freshman pitcher Tori Herrboldt went the distance in the finale to pick up her third win of the season. She was able to work her way out of jams and held the Scots to only one multiple-run inning.

GAVIN WATCH: Gavin added nine more strikeouts to her MIAC-leading total for the season. She now has 146 Ks in 83.1 innings pitched in 2021. That is two shy of her single-season best mark of 148 she posted in her sophomore season in 2019. Gavin continues to climb toward the Cobber career strikeout record. She has 423 strikeouts and needs 18 more to break the record of 440 set by Abby Haraldson from 2014-18.
