Big Innings Bite Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/24/18)---Two multiple-run innings cost the Cobbers in their 6-1, 6-2 losses to Division II MSU Moorhead.  

Concordia conceded a six-running in the opener and lost 6-1 and then gave up four runs in the seventh inning in the finale which turned a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 defeat.

The two losses continue a string of defeats where the Cobbers improved on results against their opponent from last season. Concordia was 8-run rules twice against the Dragons in 2017.

In both games against MSU Moorhead the Cobber pitchers put together a string of stellar innings but were done in a big multiple-run frame.

Abby Haraldson allowed six runs in the second inning of Game 1 but then retired 13 straight batters from the third to the seventh innings. The Dragons' didn't push a runner past second base after their big inning and only had one hit in the final five frames.

Concordia's lone run in the first game came in the seventh inning when Sydney Roberts singled to left field and Nicole Johannes came home to score from second after the MSUM left fielder bobbled the ball when trying to field the base knock.

The Cobbers were outhit 6-4 in the opener. CC had four different players get one hit. Roberts, Johannes, Kayla Nack and Elizabeth Asp all went 1-for-3 for the game.

Haraldson gave up six hits and six runs and struck out three.

Megan Gavin gave up an unearned run on one hit in the third and then another run on one hit in the fourth as MSUM took a 2-1 lead. Gavin then retired eight of the next 10 batters she faced until a two-out rally in the seventh plated four unearned runs.

Concordia (4-28) tied the game on two occasions in Game 2. CC trailed 1-0 in the third inning when Nack's ground out brought home Brooke Swarthout who led off the inning with a single through the left side.

The Cobbers' second run came in the fifth frame and tied the game at 2-2. Once again it was a ground out off the bat of Nack which plated the run. Nack's ground ball to first base sent home Riley Irman from third. Irman pinch ran for Taylor Erholtz who reached on an error.

Gavin only allowed one earned run and struck out six in the seven innings.

Johannes, Swarthout and Erholtz had the three base hits for CC in the nightcap.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have an away-away-home tripleheader this weekend. The Cobbers will play at Carleton on Friday, Apr. 27 and then at St. Mary's on Saturday, Apr. 28. CC will then return home to host Augsburg on Sunday, Apr. 29.
