Multiple-Hit Innings Are Scarce

ST. PETER, Minn. (4/17/17)--- Concordia could never come up with more than one hit in an inning and were blanked 12-0 and 5-0 at Gustavus on Monday.

The Cobbers managed to post only four hits in the two games and are now 8-20 overall and 0-12 in the MIAC this season. The Gusties win for the fourth straight game and improve to 19-11 overall and an even 6-6 in conference play.

The first game was closer than the score show as the Cobbers were done in by an eight-run fourth inning. Concordia trailed only 2-0 after two innings and then 4-0 after three before succumbing to the big-run inning.

The Cobbers managed one hit in the game. That came off the bat of Devonie Smith who led off the third with an infield single to shortstop. She would advance to third base on a passed ball and wild pitch with only one out. Brooke Ankerfelt then walked to set up a first-and-third situation with only one out and CC at the top of the batting order but a foul out and caught stealing ended the scoring threat.

Concordia allowed two runs in each of the first and second innings and then a single run in the fifth to stay out of the big-run inning.

The Cobbers had three hits in Game 2. Smith went 1-for-3 while Ankerfelt was 1-for-1 and Madi Veith was 1-for-3.

Concordia had runners on second or third base in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames but could never get the clutch hit to score a run.

Kelly Riordan went the distance in the circle in the second game for the Cobbers. She allowed only three earned runs and struck out one.

A LITTLE WAY TO THE SCHOOL RECORD: Senior Madison Little earned a walk in the first inning of the second game and then one batter later stole second base. The swipe was Little's 23rd of the year which is one shy of the school record of 24 set by Kelli Niess in 2007.

OUTSTANDING OLEK: Lexi Olek came on in relief in the first game and extended her scoreless innings pitched streak. Olek went 0.1 innings in the opener and has not allowed a run in the 3.1 innings she has pitched this year.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will stay on the road for another conference doubleheader. The Cobbers will face Augsburg in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at 3:30. The Auggies are 17-13 overall and 5-7 in the MIAC this year.
