Wins In A Different Column

CLERMONT, Fla. (3/01/17)--- Concordia's third and fourth game of the year might not get put into the "win" column but they will be filed into the "quality result" folder.

The Cobbers lost a pair of two-run games to quality teams from Pennsylvania on Day 2 of their annual spring break trip to Florida. Concordia fell 6-4 to Waynesburg in the first game of the morning and then lost 3-1 to York in the day's finale.

The Cobbers outhit Waynesburg 12-6 in Game 1. Waynesburg beat MIAC opponent St. Mary's 8-1 on Sunday and won 17 games last season. Concordia led 4-1 heading into the top of the fourth against Yellow Jackets but then allowed a pair of runs in each of the fourth and sixth frames and then a single score in the seventh to lose by two runs.

Concordia stranded nine runners against Waynesburg and had the game-tying run on first base in the seventh inning.

Four different Cobbers players had two hits each against the Yellow Jackets. Madison Little continued her tear through Florida as she went 2-for-4 after not making an out in the first day on Tuesday. Betsy Asp, Madi Veith and Cora Zackrison also had two hits in the first game of the day. Asp had the biggest hit of the game as she drove in three of the team's four runs with a two-out single in the four-run third inning.

Kelly Riordan got her first start of the season for the Cobbers and pitched into the fourth inning. She went 3.2 innings and only allowed two hits and struck out two. Abigail Haraldson entered the game in the fourth inning with the score 4-3 and the tying run on base. She proceeded to strike out the next batter to retire the side and end the threat.

Haraldson finished the game and was saddled with her first loss of the year. She allowed four hits and struck out four.

The second game was a step up in completion as Concordia faced a York squad who returned all their players from a team that won 25 games in 2016. The Spartans were picked to finish fourth in a very tough Capital Athletic Conference.

The biggest takeaway from the game against York was the stellar pitching from sophomore Kendra Spindler. Spindler allowed just one earned run and six hits against a team that hit .292 last year and pounded out 27 home runs.

Concordia had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning against the Spartans. Zackrison singled home Brooke Ankerfelt for CC's lone run. Little then hit a single to center field and Zackrison was thrown out at home as she tried to give the Cobbers a 2-1 lead.

Asp had the only other base knock for Concordia against York as she came through with a single to lead off the second inning.

ASPecial START TO HER COLLEGE CAREER: Freshman Betsy Asp has taken a liking to college softball. She has a hit in all four of the Cobbers' games this year and is hitting .545 in her 11 at bats.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will play two more games on Thursday in Clermont, Fla. The Cobbers will face Finlandia at 8 a.m. central time and then battle Rose-Hulman at 10:30. CC beat Finlandia 6-3 in the opening game of the season on Tuesday.
