MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/05/14)—Concordia put together one good pitching performance and one good hitting outing against St. Benedict but unfortunately they came in different games of the doubleheader and the Cobbers lost 4-0 and 10-4.
Junior pitcher Hilary Rotunda gave up only three earned runs and seven hits in the opener but the Concordia offense wasn't able to get on track and the Cobbers lost 4-0. CC then outhit the Blazers 12-11 in the second game but gave up three home runs and lost by six runs.
Concordia has now lost eight of its last nine games and falls to 5-16 overall. The Cobbers are still looking for their first league win of the season and are now 0-4 in MIAC play. St. Ben's is now 16-5 in all games and has won 12 of its last 15 games. The Blazers are 3-3 in the conference.
Cobber junior shortstop Paige Beseman led the offense in both games. Beseman collected two of the team's three hits in the openers and then went 3-for-4 in the second game. Beseman also scored a run in the nightcap.
Rotunda kept the St. Ben's in check for the first four innings of game No.1. She only gave up two runs on five hits in the first four frames. The Blazers then added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Kellie Morehouse had the only other hit for Concordia in the first game. She was 1-for-3.
The Cobbers jumped on the Blazers early in the second game. CC scored three runs in the very first inning. The Cobbers had four hits in the opening frame. Morehouse had the only extra-base knock in the inning when she doubled home Beseman after Beseman legged out an infield base hit.
Concordia scored their only other run in the third inning when Dominique Giesen opened the frame with a double down the left field line and then came around to score on an error.
The Cobbers were eventually done in by a six-run fifth inning when St. Ben's hit a pair of three-run homers.
Sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Jensen and freshman first baseman Jenna Esala matched Beseman's 3-for-4 effort. Both players had three hits and a single RBI in the nightcap. It was Jensen's second multiple-hit game of the year and Esala's third multiple-hit game.
Ashley Tibbetts, Giesen and Morehouse all had single hits for the second game as the Cobbers came up with their third 10-plus hit game of the year.
Concordia will continue with their 10-game home stand when they host Valley City State on Thursday, Apr. 10 at 3:30 p.m.
