Wake-Up Call Too Late In Home Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/28/13)-- It took the Concordia offense 10 innings to get on track but it wasn't enough as they dropped a pair of games against St. Olaf in the home opener on Sunday.

The Cobbers scored four runs in the final three innings of the day but wound up losing 9-0 in five innings and then 5-4. The two losses come on the heels of a sweep at Macalester on Saturday. Concordia is now 3-7 in MIAC play and 6-16 overall with two games remaining before the expanded conference tournament. The Oles win for the third straight game and move to 10-14 in all games and 5-7 in the conference.

The second game was determined in the final three innings of play. After the teams struggled to put any offense together in the first four frames, the two squads combined to score nine runs on 10 hits in the final three innings.

St. Olaf got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning but then CC rallied to tie the game at 2-2 behind a Kelly Tasky RBI single and a Paige Beseman triple to right-center field.

The Oles would then score three times in the top of the seventh to grab a commanding 5-2 lead. The Cobbers did not go quietly into the night and had the game-tying run on base before the final out of the game. The big hit in the seventh came from Joelle Link who singled home a pair of runs to push the score to 5-4.

Concordia was outhit by a narrow 7-6 margin in the second game. Tasky was the lone CC player with more than one hit in the contest. She went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.

Becca Conant pitched a complete game in the nightcap. She held the Oles scoreless through the first four innings and wound up giving up four earned runs and had two strikeouts.

The opener was all St. Olaf as they recorded multiple-run innings in the second, third and fourth frames and outhit Concordia 12-4.

The Cobbers' four hits came off the bats of Beseman and Ashley Tibbetts. Beseman was 2-for-3 in the game while Tibbetts was a perfect 2-for-2. Beseman finished the day 3-for-7.

Concordia will finish off the regular season on Monday, Apr. 29 when they host Valley City State in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
