Cobbers Edge Auggies In Game 1

Cobbers Edge Auggies In Game 1

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (4/16/13)—Becca Conant pitched out of a second-and-third jam with only one out in the top of the seventh inning as Concordia edged Augsburg 3-2 in their first game in the past 25 days.

The Cobbers posted single runs in three different innings to get the victory in their first outdoor game since returning from Arizona on their spring break trip on Mar. 4.

Conant was extremely efficient over the seven innings as she was able to scatter nine Auggie hits and stranded nine base runners. Augsburg failed to score with runners in scoring position with less than two outs on three occasions in the opener and Conant was able to finish the game by getting an out at home plate on a fielder's choice and then a ground out to second base.

Concordia (4-9/1-0 MIAC) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kaia Nygord pinch hit and knocked home Joelle Link with a run-scoring single down the left field line. Link started the inning by recording her third double of the season.

Besides Conant's ability to wriggle out of jams, the other story line for the Cobbers was their ability to answer Augsburg every time the Auggies took a lead in the first game. Augsburg scored in the top of the first but then Kaia Sele hammered her team-leading third home run of the season to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. The Auggies then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning before Mackenzie Jensen scored on the back end of first-and-third double steal situation.

Concordia was outhit 9-5 in the opener with five different Cobbers getting one hit each. Kelly Tasky had the other CC hit to join Nygord, Link, Sele and Conant.

The two teams will finish of the doubleheader beginning at approximately 5:20 p.m.
