Sele Keeps On Hitting And Hitting And...

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/14/12)—Kaia Sele would be like the Energizer Bunny if it had a softball bat – and could hit a ball. She just keeps on hitting and hitting and hitting and hitting. Sele went 3-for-4 in both games and helped Concordia gain a split in their doubleheader with third-place St. Ben's on Saturday. The Cobbers staged a huge sixth-inning rally in the opener and won 10-5 and then lost 3-1 in the nightcap.

Sele's six-hit performance broke a school record on Saturday and kept her among the MIAC leaders in every offensive category. Sele set the program record for a consecutive-game hitting streak. She has now hit safely in 16 straight games. Sele has also hit safely in 24 of the team's 25 games this year. She also upped her school-record career home run total by clouting a solo shot to start off CC's comeback in the opener. Sele now has 15 career home runs. She also upped her season batting average to .481 and is now hitting .571 against conference opponents.

Concordia fell behind 5-2 in the first game before scoring eight times in the sixth inning. In that decisive frame, CC pounded out seven hits and batted 12 hitters. That one inning helped the Cobbers outhit the Blazers 14-10 for the game. Besides the three-hit game by Sele, two of which went for extra bases, five of the top six hitters in the lineup had at least two hits. Kesley Jones also had three hits in the first game and scored the game-winning run in the sixth. Paige Beseman was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Joelle Link and Kelly Tasky also had two hits.

Freshman pitcher MacKenzie Weatherly was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion. She earned her second conference win by pitching all seven innings.  She gave up just three earned runs on the day and struck out five.

The complete offensive output for the Cobbers in the second game came in the very first at-bat. Link led off the game for CC by driving a ball over the center-field fence and that would be the only run of the game. Concordia knocked out 11 hits but stranded eight runners and had several runners thrown out at home and third base.

Both Link and Beseman collected two hits in the second game as well. Jones, Emily Salo and Kayla Hendrickson came up with the other base knocks.

Jones allowed single runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings and struck out four in the game. She only allowed two earned runs and gave up three walks.

Concordia will hit the road for another key MIAC double dip when they play at Augsburg on Sunday, Apr. 15 at 1 p.m.
