Every Run Answered In Losses At Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. (4/06/12)—Kaia Seleand Paige Beseman continued to put on a hitting clinic against Gustavus but it wasn't enough as the Cobbers fell 5-2 and 6-5 to the Gusties in St. Peter.

Sele and Beseman were a combined 5-for-13 and drove in four of the team's six runs on the day. Sele had one hit in each game and extended her hitting streak to 12 games. She also hit her league-leading fourth home run in conference play when she opened up the day by hitting a ball over the right field fence in the first inning of game 1. Sele is now hitting .448 on the year and has a slugging percentage of .746. Beseman went 3-for-4 in the first game and had an RBI in each contest. She also had a pair of doubles in the opener.

Concordia (5-16/3-5 MIAC) scored in the opening inning of game 1 but the lead was short lived as Gustavus came back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. The Gusties took a 2-1 lead in the third before a Beseman double scored Sele from first to tie the game at 2-2. Gustavus then scored three unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the game 5-2.

Cobber freshman pitcher MacKenzie Weatherly completed 6.0 innings and gave up seven hits and struck out one batter.

The second game was more of the same with Gustavus being able to counter every time the Cobbers tried to take a lead.  CC scored twice in the first but then GAC answered with two in the bottom of the first. Concordia took a brief 3-2 lead in the top of the third when Beseman hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field which scored Kelly Tasky from third. The Gusties then answered with two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth to grab a 5-4 lead. Concordia then tied the game in the seventh before Gustavus won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a walkoff single that plated a runner from second base.

Tasky led the Cobber offense in the second game as she went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Joelle Link was 1-for-3 and also came home twice. Kesley Jones pitched the full seven innings and allowed 10 hits and three earned runs while striking out four.

Concordia will have the weekend off for the Easter holiday before returning to action on Tuesday, Apr. 11 when they host Hamline in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
