Year Of The Relay Continues

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/21/19)---The Year of the Relay continued for the Cobbers on Friday as the all-sophomore 4x400-meter relay team of Cal Wright, Hayden GagnonJesse Middendorf and Colin Schuller cruised to a school-record time of 3:20.47 at the University of Minnesota at the Minnesota Cold Classic.

The finishing time is almost a full 4-seconds faster than the old program record which was set last season at the MIAC Indoor Meet. Middendorf, Gagnon and Wright were also a part of that quartet.

The four second-year athletes were the only Concordia competitors at the meet as head coach Garrick Larson used the highly competitive meet to try and post a national qualifying time. The meet at the U of M featured other quality 4x4 relay teams which helped the Cobbers post a time that smashed the school record.

Concordia's finishing time is the 15th fastest in DIII this season but it is the 10th fastest by a different DIII team – there are five schools that have multiple relay teams in the Top 15 but a school can only qualify one quartet for the national meet.

The 4x400 school record marks the second relay mark to be broken in the 2020 indoor season. Gagnon, Schuller and Wright teamed with Tom Whiting to smash the program record in the 4x200-meter relay record at the opening meet of the season.

INSIDE STAT INFO: The Cobbers' time of 3:20.47 in the 4x400-meter relay marks the first ime in school history that Concordia has had a 4x4 relay team ranked ahead of perennnial DIII track and field champion Wis.-La Crosse.

UP NEXT: Concordia's full team will head north to Grand Forks to compete in the UND Indoor Tune-Up on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m.
