Another Week, Another School Record

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/09/19)---Another weekend, another school record. Concordia traveled south to Collegeville to compete in the St. John's Invite and junior Matt Bye provided the milestone mark as he won the 60-meter hurdles and bettered the school record in the process.

Bye was one of four Cobber athletes who won individual events at the meet as the Cobbers finished in third place in the final team standings.

Bye, who participated in the NCAA National Outdoor Meet last spring in the decathlon and currently has the best mark in the conference in the indoor heptathlon, lit up the straightaway in a time of 8.50 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles which broke the school record of 8.54 set by teammate Willie Julkes in 2017. Bye's time is the second fastest in the MIAC this season.

Eric Wicklund has stepped into the spotlight in the distance events this season. He continued his successful junior year of competition by winning the 3000 meters in a time of 9:01.85. Wicklund is currently in the Top 15 in the event in the MIAC this season in both the 3K and 5K.

A pair of freshmen continued to shine in their first collegiate seasons. Cal Wright and Jesse Middendorf both won individual events and both have a chance to make a splash at their first-ever MIAC Meet in two weeks.

Wright moved up to the 400 meters on Saturday and crossed the line in a time of 50.25 which is a season best and the second fastest in school history. It is also the second fastest time in the MIAC this season. Wright also holds the top time in the MIAC in the 200 meters.

Middendorf made it a quadrella of wins to start the season. He earned his latest event victory in the 1000 meters. Like Wright, he recorded a season-best time at St. John's. Middendorf finished with a mark of 2:37.28 which was three seconds faster than the next competitor. Middendorf's time is the seventh best in the MIAC this year. He is also in the Top 20 in the conference in the 600,800 and mile.

Concordia's 4x400-meter relay team also posted a season-best time at the meet. The quartet is made up of all freshmen and finished second in the event. Wright and Middendorf were joined by Hayden Gagnon and Jake Svenby and clocked a 3:27.03 which is the fourth fastest time in the MIAC this year.

Gagnon also claimed third place in the high jump as he cleared the bar at 6-0 which is also a season best.

Sam Haley and Jake Steiner had season-best marks which pushed them into the Top 10 in the MIAC. Haley flew over the bar at 13-06.5 in the pole vault and finished third in the meet. His height is No.8 in the MIAC this year.

Steiner put up his season-best distance in the weight throw where he recorded a mark of 49-11. That is No.8 in the MIAC. Steiner is also eighth in the shot put this season.

UP NEXT: Concordia will stay close to home in their final tune-up before the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. The Cobbers will compete at the UND Indoor Invite on Feb. 16.
