Bye & Supinski Score On MIAC Day 2

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/12/18)---Matt Bye and David Supinski combined to score 12 team points and help Concordia finish eighth at the MIAC Championship Meet held at Carleton.

Bye matched his runner-up finish in the decathlon by placing second in the 110-meter hurdles while Supinski closed out his college career by placing fifth in the 400 meters.


Concordia also got team points from a pair of freshmen in field events and added another point from the 4x100-meter relay team as they finished in eighth place for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

Bye qualified for the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with the sixth fastest time at 15.72. He then unleashed a mark of 15.10 in the finals to grab second place. Bye was in a tangle for places 2-5 heading into the final hurdle but then found another gear and edged the third-place finisher at the finish line.

Bye's time of 15.10 is a personal best and is the sixth fastest in school history.

Bye also posted a Top 10 finish in the high jump on Day 2. He cleared a season-best 6-0.50 and placed 10th.  

Supinski rounded out the individual track team points by rallying to finish fifth in the 400 meters. Supinski ran a 49.52 in the prelims which was the fifth fastest. He then started slow on Saturday bu found his finishing kick around the final turn and got up into fifth place. He crossed the line in a time of 48.81. He was only .25 of a second off of fourth place and his time is a season best.

Jacob Steiner and Patrick Griffin completed successful MIAC outdoor meet debuts. Both first-year athletes scored points in two different events. On Friday Steiner was eighth in the shot put and Griffin was fourth in the javelin. On Saturday Steiner was seventh in the hammer throw and Griffin was eighth in the discus.

Steiner qualified in the No.8 spot in the prelims with a distance of 143-11 on his second throw. He was able to improve on his final place by coming through with a personal best mark of 151-08 in the first attempt of the finals.

Griffin qualified for the finals of the discus in the ninth, and final, spot. He had a distance of 138-09 on his first try and then fouled on his next two attempts. He jumped into the No.8 spot on his very first try of the finals when he came through with a career-best mark of 141-06.

Freshman teammate Ben Schelske also qualified for the finals. He finished in ninth place with a season best mark of 139-04 which came in the final round of prelims.

The Cobbers' final team point of the day was acquired by the 4x100-meter relay team of Wyatt Lautt, Yanick Tade, Cole Vlasak and Tom Whiting. The quartet ran a 44.91 and finished in eighth place. Their time was a season best.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will send a select group of athletes to the Wis.-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier Meet on Thursday, May  17.
