4x800 Leads Way On Day 1 At MIAC

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/11/18)--- It was the final event on a cool, damp day at Day 1 of the MIAC Championship Meet that provided the most heat for Concordia. The Cobbers' 4x800-meter relay team came out of nowhere to post a school Top 5 mark and finish third in the event.

The day-ending relay was one of four events where the Cobbers scored points as they finished Day 1 in fourth place. Concordia has 28 team points which is three shy of third-place St. Olaf and one ahead of fifth-place Hamline.

The Cobber 4x800 relay quartet of Nick Solheim, Connor Haugrud, Munir Isahak and David Supinski stayed towards the lead the entire race and crossed the line in a time of 7:52.24. That time was less than three seconds off the second-place finishers and the fourth fastest time in program history.

The 4x800 finishing time is the fastest by a Cobber team since the 2005 conference meet. Their third-place finish earned CC six team points – the highest scoring event on the opening day.

Concordia had a pair of individuals with fourth-place finishes to lead the field crew at the meet. Senior Eli Beachy cleared 14-09 in the pole vault in the final MIAC Meet of his career.

Freshman Patrick Griffin started his outdoor conference career by placing fourth in the javelin. Griffin earned a spot in the finals with a distance of 174-02. He couldn't better that mark in his three finals attempts and finished fourth.

The final team point of the day came from another freshman. Jacob Steiner recorded a distance of 47-03 in the shot put and finished in eighth place. He qualified for the finals with a mark of 45-04.50 which earned him the ninth, and last, spot in the finals.

Senior Adam Frazier had the seventh farthest prelim distance but couldn't better that mark in the finals and finished in ninth place at 46-06.

The Cobbers also had a pair of track athletes qualify for finals on Saturday.

Sophomore Matt Bye clocked a 15.72 in the 110-meter hurdles and qualified sixth for the eight-person finals.

Supinski warmed up for his spot on the relay team by running a 49.52 in the individual 400 meters and qualified for the finals in fifth place.         

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will complete in Day 2 at MIAC Championship Meet on Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m. at Carleton in Northfield.
