Supinski Earns MIAC Elite 22 Award

MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/12/17)--- David Supinski added one of the top conference academic awards to his growing list of athletic achievements. The Concordia sophomore was named the winner of the MIAC Elite 22 award for academic excellence in men's indoor track and field.

The MIAC Elite 22 award, which was announced after the conference indoor championship meet, honors the individual with the highest grade point average that is a sophomore, junior or senior who earns All-MIAC honors at the MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet.

Supinski becomes the second Concordia student/athlete to earn the MIAC Elite 22 award since the conference started the honor for the 2013-14 athletic calendar. Women's soccer player Marta Prosinski won the award in the fall of 2014 after the Cobbers reached the championship game of the MIAC tournament.

The MIAC's Elite 22 Award, modeled after the NCAA's Elite 90 honor, is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average among competing teams at MIAC playoff championship games in team sports, and among all-conference honorees at MIAC championships in individual sports. According to the MIAC, student-athletes must have achieved sophomore status and be in at least their second seasons with their current team.

Supinski is a Biology major who carries a 3.95 grade point average. He earned the athletic part of the Elite 22 award by finishing second in the 600 meters at the MIAC indoor meet. It marked the first time that he has earned all-conference honors at the indoor conference meet.  

Supinski had another record-breaking season in his second collegiate year. As a freshman he broke the school record in the 600 meters and then bettered that mark this year. Supinski also broke the school record in the 400 meters during the 2017 campaign.

His time at the conference meet was the second time he bettered his record in the 600 meters this year. He originally beat his 2016 mark on Feb. 4 at the Bison Open and then beat that mark by .22 of a second with his time of 1:21.45 at the MIAC meet.

Supinski also set the school record in the 400 meters at the Bison Open. He recorded a time of 49.49 to become the first athlete in Cobber history to break the 50-second barrier in the 400 meters. His time bettered the old mark of 50.45 set by Josh Smith in 2008.
