Supinski Stars On Saturday
ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/25/17)--- The second day didn't feature the same fireworks as Friday's opener at the MIAC Championship Meet for Concordia but there was still a school record broken and many personal best marks as the Cobbers finished seventh at the annual conference indoor meet.
Concordia finished the meet with 55 team points which was only eight points behind the Top 5 and 13 points ahead of the eight-place finisher. The 55 team points is the most for the Cobbers since the 2013 season when they finished with 59 points and placed sixth.
Sophomore David Supinski stepped into the school-record spotlight on Saturday. After watching teammates Jackson Schepp and Willie Julkes III better program marks on Friday, Supinski decided to best his own school record in the 600 meters.
Supinski started slow, got up to speed and then raced to a 1:21.45 and finished second in the event. His finishing time was .22 of a second faster than the school record he set on Feb. 4 at the Bison Open.
The second-place finish was a two-spot improvement from last season when he broke the school record and finished in fourth place. The second-place finish also marks the first indoor all-conference honor for Supinski.
The other Top 10 finish in the track events on Saturday came from senior Matthew Lillehaugen. Lillehaugen, who placed fifth in the 800 meters on Friday, nearly broke his own school record in the 1,000 meters on Saturday. Facing an incredibly strong field in the event, Lillehaugen stayed with the top runners to the end of the race and put up a time of 2:30.96. Lillehaugen finished sixth in the race where the top 2 runners both broke the conference record in the event.
Lillehaugen's finishing time was a mere .05 of a second off his school record of 2:30.91 which he set earlier in the season.
The Cobbers had three players post Top 10 finishes in field events. Senior Alec Boike earned his first-ever spot in the finals of an event at the conference meet. He came through with a personal best mark of 46-00.00 in the prelims of the shot put and qualified for the finals by 13 inches. Boike wasn't able to better his mark in the finals and finished ninth in the event.
Once again the Cobber pole vault crew came through with multiple Top 10 finishers. Eli Beachy cleared 14-09.50 and finished in sixth place and earned three team points.
Two-sport athlete Eddie Clifton also cleared 14 feet in the conference pole vault event. He posted a mark of 14-03.50 which tied his season best height.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have one more meet to have athletes try and earn a spot at the NCAA Indoor National Meet. The Cobbers will head to Northfield to compete in the Ole Qualifier on Friday, Mar. 3 at St. Olaf.
