Day 1 Scheppccess At MIAC Decathlon

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/5/16)—Reigning MIAC indoor heptathlon champion Jackson Schepp is in perfect position to add the title of best all-around outdoor athlete as well. Schepp leads the MIAC decathlon after Day 1 at Carleton.

Schepp posted lifetime best marks in the high jump and 400 meters to amass 3,459 points on the first day of the competition. He leads the decathlon by 14 points heading into the final five events.

Schepp, who was slated to be in second or third place after Day 1, cleared 6-07.00 in the high jump and then ran a 51.61 in the 400 meters to take the lead heading into Friday. Schepp almost cleared 6-08.25 in the high jump but his height of 6-07 gave him 813 points which was his highest point total of any of the first five events.

The Cobbers had five other athletes in the decathlon. Joe Hendrickson sits in fifth place after Thursday with 3,086 points. Gabe Wright is seventh at 3,023 while Hans-Kristof Nelson is 13th at 2,710 points, Brett Brenden is 15th with 2,627 points and Jacob Nepstad is 17th at 2,522 points.

Schepp started the day with a season-best time of 11.69 in the 100-meter dash which netted him 713 points. He followed that up with a distance of 21-0.75 in the long jump which was worth 679 points. Schepp then battled through the shot put, normally his least strong event, and came away with 512 points and a mark of 34-03.

Schepp's height of 6-07 in the high jump is the second best in all of the MIAC this season. His previous season best was 6-05.50 and came at the Lee Krough Invite at Gustavus on Apr. 16.

Hendrickson and Wright also recorded two personal records on the opening day. Hendrickson's best events were the two running competitions where he scored over 700 points in each. He clocked an 11.70 in the 100 meters to get 711 points and then closed out Thursday with a 52.45 in the 400 meters which earned him 705 points.

Wright's two best events came in the final two of the day. He scored 705 points in the high jump with a height of 6-02.25 and then accrued 665 points in the 400 meters after crossing the line in 53.39.

The six Cobber athletes will finish off the conference outdoor multi-event competition on Friday starting at 10:30 a.m. The five events scheduled for Friday are the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. Hendrickson is a strong Day 2 competitor and used the final five events to finish second at last year's decathlon competition.
