Withstanding The Weather

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (4/10/16)--- Freshman David Supinski has picked up at the start of the outdoor season where he left off at the end of the indoor season as he helped Concordia in their first outdoor meet in Minnesota this season.

Supinski ran a 2:00.09 in the 800 meters at the St. John's Outdoor Invitational and finished in second place. He recorded the highest finish of any Cobber athlete of the meet. Supinksi was the top Division III finisher in the event as he lost to a competitor from DI Michigan Tech by a scant .33 of a second.

The meet at St. John's was the team's second of the season and was postponed a day because of the cold and windy weather in Collegeville.

Supinski has had an outstanding freshman season as he broke the school record in the 600 meters at the MIAC Indoor Meet.

Junior Matthew Lillehaugen has also put together his best season on the track. Lillehaugen earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in the 1000 meters at the conference indoor meet in March and has continued that success outside. At St. John's he finished fifth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:12.37. That mark puts him in the top 15 in the MIAC this season.

The Cobbers had three other athletes post top 10 finishes on Sunday. Senior Race Heitkamp who placed sixth in the 800 meters after crossing the line in a time of 2:02.45. Freshmen Brett Brenden was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles at 18.10 and Alex Van Bemmelen was ninth in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 71.10.

Jackson Schepp followed up his All-MIAC indoor season by finishing third in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. Schepp came away with a height of 6-2.25 in the high jump which is only .50 of an inch off his mark at the MIAC Indoor Meet where he earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. Schepp's finishing distance in the long jump was 20-05.50.

Gabe Wright came away with the top field finish of any CC athlete. He also cleared 6-02.50 in the high jump but placed higher than Schepp due to misses at earlier heights.

The Concordia pole vault crew had a solid opening meet. Eddie Clifton led a quartet of Cobbers who all placed in the top 11. Clifton cleared 14-05.25 which is the third best mark in the MIAC this year. He was tied for third in the event at SJU. Teammate Eli Beachy finished sixth with a height of 13-05.25 while freshman Sam Haley was 10th at 13-05.25 and Josh Murrey was 11th with the same height.

Concordia will hope for warmer weather when they compete at the Gustavus Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 16 starting at 10 a.m.
