Zylstra Doubles Up On Outstanding Field Athlete Award

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/14/15)—Brandon Zylstra earned his second consecutive MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete award after winning the long jump and finishing second in the high jump at the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet.

Zylstra won the same award at the 2015 MIAC Indoor Meet in March. He also posted the same results at the conference indoor meet by winning the long jump and posting a runner-up finish in the high jump.

Zylstra started his MIAC Outdoor Meet by winning the long jump. He recorded his winning distance in his fifth attempt of the event. He went 22-05.25 and won the conference long jump by less than four inches. His mark was a season best and the fourth farthest in school history.

Zylstra then took a short break before competing in his second event on Friday. He crossed ends of the infield at Macalester Stadium and proceeded to have another back-and-forth dual with the Scots' Logan Hovie.

Both Zylstra and Hovie battled at the MIAC Indoor Meet and the two picked up their competitive rivalry at the outdoor meet. Zylstra finished the high jump event by clearing a school-record height of 6-10.75. It broke the old record set by Joe Schmidgall back in 2000.

Zylstra's height tied with Hovie but  he wound in second place in the final standings due to misses at lower heights.

Zylstra's mark of 6-10.74 is tied for the fourth best in Division III this season which will assure Zylstra a berth at the NCAA National Outdoor Meet on May 21-23 in Canton, N.Y.
