Wright Earns MIAC Elite 22 Award

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/15)—Concordia junior Gabe Wright became the second Cobber athlete in school history to earn the Elite 22 Award given out by the Minnesota Collegiate Athletic Conference. Wright earned the award for his participation in the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet on Mar. 6-7.

Concordia senior women's soccer player Marta Prosinski won the Elite 22 Award during the MIAC playoffs in the fall of 2014.

The MIAC Elite 22 Award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The award was established prior to the 2013-14 academic year.

Modeled after the NCAA Elite 89 Award, the MIAC Elite 22 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average (GPA) in each sport who meet similarly high, sport-specific athletic requirements. The winner must be a sophomore, junior or senior and in at least his or her second season of competition with their current team.

The indoor track and field MIAC Elite 22 Awards are presented to the individual with the highest GPA and recognized as a member of the All-Conference Team at the 2015 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which includes the top three individual finishers in each event and each first-place relay team.

Wright has an impressive 3.995 GPA while majoring in Mathematics. Wright earned the Elite 22 award by claiming All-Conference honors in the heptathlon. He finished in third place in the multi-event championship with a total of 4,233 points which was a career best and the third highest total for the heptathlon in school history.

Wright also earned MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in the high jump. He placed fourth in the event by clearing a height of 6-02.

Wright has started the outdoor season where he left off during the indoor campaign. He finished third in the decathlon at the St. John's Multi-Event Meet with a score of 5,767 points. That total is a career best and is No.15 on the school's all-time record list. It is the highest total posted by a Cobber athlete since 2011 and the top mark in the MIAC this year.
