A Chilly Opener For The Outdoor Season

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (3/28/15)—It was a chilly outdoor opener for Concordia. The Cobbers competed in the St. John's Quadrangular in Collegeville and came away with a third-place finish.

Concordia earned event wins from Mark Goss in the high jump and Cole Young in the javelin as they kicked off the outdoor portion of their schedule.

Goss posted a height of 6-2.75 and won the event on misses at lower heights. Young's very first throw of the season in the javelin turned out to be the winner.  He let loose with a mark of 173-02.00 and won the event by over 20 feet. His winning distance is the 13th farthest in school history and second longest since 2008.

Ben Vickstrom carried over his speed from the indoor season to the first meet of the outdoor schedule. Vickstrom finished second in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meters. Vickstrom had a finishing time of 11.348 in the 100 meters which was 1/100th of a second faster than the third-place finisher. He then clocked a 22.98 in the 200 meters.

Other top 3 finishes posted by Cobber athletes included Josh Murrey in the pole vault, Joe Hendrickson in the javelin, Jackson Schepp in the triple jump and Henry Dobbs in the 5000 meters. Murrey cleared 13-07.25 and finished third. Hendrickson was runner-up to Young in the javelin with a distance of 149-07. 00 while Schepp was third in the triple jump at 40-09.75 and Dobbs clocked a 17:20.21 in the 5k and placed second.

Freshman Chris Cunningham was fourth in both the 100 and 200 meters. He ran an 11.65 in the 100 meters and finished in 23.41 in the 200 meters.

Concordia will have an extended break before returning to St. John's to compete in the SJU Invite on Apr. 11.
