Sprint-Deep Cobbers Finish Second At SJU Triangular

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/14/15)— Jackson Schepp and Ben Vickstrom recorded event wins and Concordia placed second at the St. John's Triangular Meet on Saturday.

Schepp won the triple jump with a mark of 42-01.25 while Vickstrom continues to be one of the fastest athletes in the conference as he won the 200 meters in a time of 23.13.

The Cobbers finished the triangular meet with host St. John's and Macalester with 121.0 points. That was 34 points shy of the Johnnies who won the meet and 31 points ahead of the Scots.

Concordia continues to show off its depth at the sprints this season. The Cobbers had five runners finish in the top 10 of the 200 meters and also had three athletes in the final heat of the 60-meter dash. Both events were the most competitive of the meet.

Vickstrom won the 200 meters but was followed closely by freshman Dominic Neameyer and juniors Jon Baune and Dan McGuire. All three posted times under 25 seconds. Neameyer finished third in the time of 24.11 while Baune crossed the tape at 24.65 and was fifth and McGuire was seventh in a time of 24.85. Tony DeLeon rounded out the top 10 finishers as he claimed 10th place with a mark of 25.87/

The 60-meter dash finals had a maroon and gold flavor. Vickstrom was third after running a 7.21. Brandon Zylstra took time away from the high jump and clocked a 7.49 to place fifth. He posted a 7.36 time in the qualifying heat. Neameyer qualified for the finals in a time of 7.49 and then finished sevenh in the final at 7.52.

Zylstra and Neameyer also had top 3 finishes in the long jump. Zylstra was second with a distance of 20-11.25 and Neameyer placed third with a season-best mark of 20-08.00. That distance pushes him into the top 10 of the conference. Zylstra currently holds the top mark in the event in the MIAC at 22-05.75.  

Theo Betting, Carl Wahlin and Jeff Fiebelkorn had the other top 5 finishes in multi-athlete contested events.  Betting was fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 53.58. Wahlin used his long distance skills to finish the mile run in 4:39.74 which was good for fifth place while Fiebelkorn was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a final heat time of 9.64. Teammate had one of the top times in the prelim heats when he raced to a time of 9.25.

Concordia will turn around and back to St. John's next weekend when they compete in the SJU Quadrangular on Saturday, Feb. 21.
