Bookend Athletes Stand Out At SJU Quadrangular

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/22/14)—Concordia was led by the college-year bookend tandem of Alex Benzegala and Jackson Schepp at the St. John's Quadrangular. The senior and freshman helped the Cobbers to a fourth-place finish at the meet.

Benzegala posted a pair of top 5 finishes in the sprint events while Schepp recorded a trio of top 5 finishes in the jump events.

Benzegala continues to excel in his final collegiate season. He ran a 23.47 in the 200 meters and finished in fifth place. He then clocked a 51.64 in the 400 meters and was second place – just .34 of a second out of first place.

Schepp put up his second straight successful meet. Last week he posted top 10 conference marks at the Bison Open and on Saturday he finished second in the high jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. His height of 6-04.00 in the high jump is .50 inches higher than last week at NDSU and is currently fourth best in the MIAC. He jumped 20-05.25 in the long jump which is the farthest by any CC athlete this season. His mark of 40-09.50 is a season best and the 11th farthest in the MIAC this season.

Despite bringing a smaller squad to the meet in Collegeville, the Cobbers were still able to post some quality results. Ethan Spittle ran a season-best time of 1:26.14 in the 600 meters and placed third. Noah Dovre and Jamie Marrier recorded top 5 finishes in the 60-meter hurdles. Dovre was fourth in a time of 8.97 and Marrier was fifth at 9.12. Dovre's time is a career best and currently the ninth fastest in the conference this season.

Concordia also had several top 5 performances in the field events. Freshman Alec Boike was fourth in the shot put with a mark of 44-06.00. That moves him into the top 10 of the MIAC. Mark Goss and Theo Betting were right behind Schepp in the high jump at 6-0.00 while Josh Murrey and Eddie Clifton both tied for fourth in the pole vault with a height of 13-09.25. It is a season best for Clifton.

The Cobbers will have one more indoor meet before the conference championship. CC will compete at the Ole Open in Northfield on Friday, Feb. 28.
