Olson Named MIAC Indoor Field Athlete Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/12/13)—Concordia senior Erik Olson (Buffalo, Minn.) was named the MIAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after breaking the school record in the pole vault for the second time in two weeks.

Olson, who became the first athlete in school history to clear 15 feet in the pole vault, cleared 15-00.25 at the NDSU Bison Open on Saturday. His record-setting vault came on his second attempt at that height. Olson then tried to clear 15-06.25 but failed in all three attempts. Olson wound up finishing seventh in the event but was the top Division III athlete in the meet.

This new historic performance came just two weeks after Olson cleared 15 feet to break a 30-year old school record. This season, Olson's height of 15-00.25 meters is tied for second among all MIAC men's pole vaulters.

The Cobbers, and Olson, have two more competitions on the indoor schedule to prepare for the 2013 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be hosted by St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn., on Feb. 28, March 1 and March 2. This weekend they'll travel to Collegeville as one of four teams in the Saint John's Quadrangular meet, which begins Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Next Friday, Feb. 22, Concordia will get the chance to become familiar with the site of the MIAC meet, as it will participate in the Ole Qualifier in Northfield at 5 p.m.
