Goss and Bye Lead The Way At The Ole Invite
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/25/12)—And then there was one. The Cobbers completed the penultimate meet of the indoor season on Saturday and now have only one meet left in the season. The Cobbers recorded eight top 5 finishes at the St. Olaf Invite as they prepared for the MIAC Championship Meet next weekend.
Once again freshman high jumper Mark Goss stole the show for Concordia. Goss has been a huge bright spot for the Cobbers this season. At St. Olaf he tied for the high jump title with a season-best mark of 6-06.00. That jump is the second best in the conference this season and sixth best in school history.
Sophomore Simon Erlandson wasn't about to allow Goss to grab all the headlines in the high jump. He put up a height of 6-02.00 and finished in third place. His jump is eighth best in the MIAC.
Capping the Cobber field top 5 finishes were Erik Olson, Connor Johnson and Joe Brunjes. Olson came away with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 14-03.25. That mark pushes him into the top 10 of the MIAC this year. Johnson and Bruenjes went 4-5 in the triple jump. Johnson had a jump of 40-09.00 which placed him fourth in the event and is just outside the top 10 of the conference for the year. Bruenjes placed fifth with a mark of 40-03.50. That is the 12th farthest jump in the league this year.
Concordia junior John Bye led the track athletes. He had a pair of top 5 finishes at the meet. Bye raced to a 8.92 in the 60-meter hurdles and finished fifth. He then recorded a time of 23.16 in the 200 meter sand finished fourth. Bye's time in the 200 is the 11th fastest in the conference this year.
Cobber freshman Bruce Shields was close behind Bye in the 200. Shields ran a season-best 23.24 and came in fifth in the race. Shields' mark places him in the top 15 of the conference heading into the MIAC Meet.
Concordia will now finish off the indoor season by competing at the MIAC Championship Meet on Mar.2-3 at Macalester College in St. Paul.
