Spring Break Starting Success

ORLANDO, Fla. (2/26/18)---Senior Isaac Toivonen put the Cobbers on the winning track to start their annual spring break trip as he claimed a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win to clinch Concordia's 5-4 win over Hanover (Ind.) at the USTA Tennis Center.

The team match came down to Toivonen's bout at No.1 singles after the Cobbers won a pair of doubles matches and then won singles competitions at No.2 and No.6 singles.

The victory gives Concordia two wins in their last three matches and pushes their season record to 4-2. The Panthers are now 2-7 on the year.

The Cobbers got off their spring break trip off on the right foot as they won two of the three doubles bout. Toivonen and David Youngs won 8-4 at No.1 singles and then David Schneck and Erik Porter kept their unbeaten season going by also winning 8-4 at No.2 doubles. Schneck and Porter are now a perfect 6-0 on the season.

Porter carried the momentum over from doubles to his singles bout. He rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No.2 singles and was first in the clubhouse to give Concordia a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore Jared Saue had to outlast his opponent in the super-set tie-breaker to get another key singles win for CC. He lost the first set 6-4 but then rallied to grab the second set 6-3. He followed that up with a pair of early break points in the tie-breaker and won 10-6.

The stage was then set for Toivonen to start his final spring break adventure in winning fashion. He needed to go to the tie-breaker in the first set but never trailed and won 7-4. Toivonen then eased to a 6-3 win in the second set to earn the team win for the Cobbers.

The victory is Toivonen's fourth of the year. He is now 4-2 in singles play and a similar 4-2 in doubles bouts with Youngs.
