Two Is Even Better

SUPERIOR, Wis. (1/28/18)---If one is good then two is even better.

That was Concordia's motto for the opening weekend of the season as they blanked Wis.-Superior 9-0 to earn their second straight victory of the season.

The victory marks the first time since the 1993 season that the Cobbers have opened the year with two straight wins.

The overall team match cruised through the three doubles bouts and six singles matches. Concordia earned straight set wins in all the singles matches and lost only seven games in doubles play against the Yellowjackets who were playing in their first-ever collegiate tennis match.

The highlight of the morning came at No.3 doubles where freshman Ben Swanson teamed with super-senior Matthew Engum to record an 8-1 win. The win was Swanson's first collegiate victory.

The other two doubles bouts were settled by identical 8-3 scores. The No.1 doubles team of Isaac Toivonen and David Youngs, who earned All-Conference honors last season rolled to their second victory of the season as did the No.2 doubles tandem of Erik Porter and David Schneck.

Toivonen started the straight-set singles decisions by winning 6-3, 6-0 at No.1 singles. The win is Toivonen's 11th straight in team competitions.

Porter then closed out his match next at No.2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. The victory is his first singles win of the year and sealed the overall team event for the day by putting CC up 5-0.

Engum, Schneck,  Youngs and Jared Saue then completed the sweep for the Cobbers. Engum, playing at No.4 singles, posted a 6-0, 6-3 win which was followed by a 6-2, 6-1 victory for Schneck at No.5 singles. Youngs' match at No. 3 singles was the second-to-last bout to finish and he came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Saue then closed the book on the successful first weekend by winning 6-0, 6-1 at No.6 singles.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a break for the Super Bowl weekend and then open conference play on the road. The Cobbers will travel southwest to Sartell to take on St. John's on Sunday, Feb. 11 at  1 p.m. The Johnnies are 1-0 on the year after blanking Northwestern on Saturday.
