New Month, Same Toivonen

FARGO, N.D. (4/01/17)---The calendar might have turned over to a new month but the same red-hot Isaac Toivonen turned up in the Cobbers' match with Carleton.

Toivonen, who entered April on a three-match win streak, won his No.1 singles match and also helped claim a win at No.1 doubles but it wasn't enough as Concordia fell 7-2 to the Knights.

Concordia has their one-match win streak come to an end and is now 3-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Carleton remains perfect in MIAC play as they up their record to 4-0. The Knights are 8-2 in all matches.

Toivonen, who started his junior season by winning four straight singles matches, earned the Cobbers' lone singles win by outlasting his opponent in the super-set tie-breaker. Toivonen won the opening set 7-5 and then lost 6-3 in the second. He was then able to rally in the super set and claimed a 10-6 victory.

The singles win came directly after Toivonen and doubles partner David Youngs won their sixth straight doubles match. Toivonen and Youngs were in control of their match at No.1 doubles from the opening served and rolled to an 8-2 victory.

Concordia was almost able to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play but the Cobber No.3 doubles tandem of Matthew Engum and Jesse Schneeberger gave up a late break and lost a hard-fought 8-5 decision.

Engum battled into the only other super-set tie-breaker in singles play. He recorded a 6-4 win in the opening set at No.5 singles but then lost 6-1 in the second and could never recover – losing 10-2 in the super set.

I LIKE IKE: Isaac Toivonen is now 8-3 in singles play this year. The eight singles wins marks the most in a single season in his college career. His previous season high came in 2015 when he won six matches as a freshman. Toivonen is also 5-2 in conference play and his five wins is most by any No.1 singles player in the conference.

TOIVONEN AND YOUNGS: The doubles team sounds like a Big 4 Accounting Firm but is actually the top wins leader in the MIAC among No.1 doubles teams. Isaac Toivonen and David Youngs have now won six straight doubles bouts and are 7-4 on the year. The seven wins is the most by a Cobber doubles team since 2011 when the doubles team of Matt Edin and Devin Larson went 14-3.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will hit the road for another non-conference/conference doubleheader next weekend. The Cobbers will play at Northwestern (Minn.) on Friday, Apr. 7 and then head over to Hamline to take on the Pipers on Saturday, Apr. 8.
