S & S Boys Gets Singles Wins In MIAC Showdown

FARGO, Minn. (3/28/15)—Concordia got a pair of singles wins from the S & S boys of Schneck & Schneeberger but it wasn't enough as the Cobbers fell 7-2 to St. John's.

Freshman David Schneck and sophomore Jesse Schneeberger claimed wins at No.3 and No.4 singles to give Concordia their two wins in a match that lasted close to four hours.

The Cobbers continue to look for their first win of the season. CC is now 0-9 in all matches and 0-6 in the MIAC. The Jonnies are now 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The two singles wins were complete opposites. Schneck played his best match of the season and rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No.3 singles. It's Schneck's second overall win of the year and snaps a seven-match losing skid. Cobber head coach Steve Futchko calls Schneck one of the most improved players on the team and it showed as Schneck routinely hit winners from the baseline and was also confident playing the serve-and-volley game.

While Schneck's win was more of a walk in the park, Schneeberger's victory was a crawl through the city. Schneeberger came out flat and lost the first set 6-1. Schneeberger then started his comeback in the second set by getting to the net and forcing his opponent to hit passing shots.

Schneeberger claimed a 6-2 victory in the second set and then outlasted his opponent to finish the super-set tie-breaker win at 10-7.

The win was Schneeberger's first of the season and first MIAC singles win of his collegiate career.

Concordia lost another singles match in the super-set tie-breaker. Cobber freshman Isaac Toivonen lost a 6-7 (7-1), 6-3, 9-11 rollercoaster special at No.1 singles. Toivonen was up 5-3 in the first set before losing in the tie-breaker and was then up 8-6 in the super-set tie-breaker.

The closest doubles match of the day came at No.2 doubles where Schneeberger and Zach Zitur lost a tight 8-5 decision.

Concordia will have an extended break for the Easter holiday. The Cobbers will return to action when they play at Hamline on Saturday, Apr. 11 at 3 p.m.
