A 485-Mile Round Trip Split

ST. PETER, Minn. (3/231/13)—Concordia split a rare away-home non-conference-conference two-match series on Friday and Saturday as they rallied to win at Northwestern (Minn.) 5-4 and then returned home and lost 9-0 to No.17-ranked Gustavus.

The win over the Eagles in a non-conference contest on Friday centered around the stellar singles play from Concordia. The Cobbers dropped two of the three doubles bouts and then rallied to take four of the five singles matches.

The singles rally against Northwestern was put up by the No.3,45, and 6 singles players for CC. Freshman Nick Moe won his match at No.3 singles 6-0, 6-2 then Zach Zitur followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No.4 singles and Zach Biggar eked out a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 11-9 in the super-set tie-breaker at No.5 singles before Matthew Jacobson finished off the win at No.6 singles claiming a 6-2, 6-2 victory. It was Jacobson's first collegiate singles win in his very first college match.

The win for Moe was his second straight and third in his last five matches while Zitur and Biggar both snapped three-match losing streaks.

The lone doubles win against Northwestern came from the No.2 tandem of Biggar and Peter Dahlberg. The two were playing their first match as doubles partners and came away with an 8-6 win.

The Cobbers then turned around and got back I-94 to take on nationally-ranked, and perennial league champion, Gustavus in an early-morning match on Saturday. Concordia battled through three tough doubles matches and then lost all six singles matches in straight sets. The closest bout in doubles came from the No.2 duo of Moe and Dahlberg. The team's regular No.2 tandem lost a hard-fought 8-6 battle.

Concordia is now 3-8 in all matches and 0-3 in league play. The Cobbers will host a pair of MIAC matches in two weeks when they square off against Carleton on Apr. 6 and then St. Thomas on Apr. 7. Due to the continued snow accumulation on the Concordia courts, both matches are expected to be played at Courts Plus in Fargo.
