Cobbers Can't Come All The Way Back In Collegeville
Concordia cut the St. John's lead to a single goal early in the second half, but then gave up two goals in the final 17 minutes of play and lost 4-1.
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (9/2822)---Freshman Yousif Alshihmani's goal with 27:48 remaining in the second half brought the Cobbers within a single goal at St. John's, and set the stage for a dramatic finish. Unfortunately for Concordia, the Johnnies were able to come up with the final two goals of the game and earned a 4-1 decision.
The loss is the third straight for Concordia and drops their season mark to 2-7. CC is now 1-2-0 in the MIAC. St. John's wins for the third time in the last four games and is now 5-1-2 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.
Concordia was forced to chase the game early as they allowed a goal in the seventh minute of play. The Johnnies got on the board at 6:56 to take the 1-0 lead.
The 1-goal margin would remain until the ninth minute of the second half when SJU doubled its lead at 53:50.
Alshihmani pulled the Cobbers within a goal when he scored his first collegiate goal at the 62:12 mark. Telvin Vah and Mason Weigel earned the assists on the goal. For Vah it was his team-leading sixth assist and 10 overall points. His six assists are second in the MIAC. Weigel now has a career-high three helpers and seven points.
The 2-1 score line would last for 11:08 before St. John's was able to get the all-important "next goal". SJU scored at 73:04, and then finished off the score sheet with a penalty kick in the final minute of play.
Concordia was outshot 21-6 in total shots and 14-3 in shots on goal for the day. Both teams had four corner kicks.
Alshihmani led CC with a pair of shots and had the one on goal.
Erick Torres played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Cobbers and made a season-high 10 saves. He now has 47 saves on the year which is second most in the MIAC.
