DULUTH, Minn. (9/17/22)---Sophomore defender Seth Kotzbacher scored the game-winning goal, and assisted on Concordia's first goal as he helped the Cobbers post a 2-1 over St. Scholastica in Duluth.
Concordia recorded a goal in each half to snap a 2-game losing skid. The win is the first conference victory of the year for CC as they move to 2-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the MIAC. The Saints fall to 1-4-2 in all games and 0-2-0 in the conference.
Kotzbacher's 3-point game came courtesy of his head. He flicked a throw-in towards the goal to set up the first Cobber score, and then rose above the St. Scholastica defense to head home the winner in the 59th minute of play.
The first of Concordia's goals came in the sixth minute of play. Mason Weigel threw the ball in on the right wing. Kotzbacher ran on to the toss and flicked it backwards towards the middle of the net. Senior Matthew Nemer was parked in the perfect spot and was able to knock home the ball from the top of the 6-yard box. The strike at 5:49 was Nemer's first of the year and the third of his career. Weigel earned his second assist of the season on the play.
The eventual game-winning goal came off of another restart for the Cobbers. CC won a corner kick on the left side goal, where freshman Dylan Sipe went out to take the kick. Kotzbacher started on the front post, stepped into the field of play and flicked the ball into the far side netting. The game winner came at the 58:14 mark and was Kotzbacher's second of the season.
St. Scholastica pushed the game towards a dramatic finish when they cut the lead in half with a goal at 81:11. The Cobbers were able to withstand a late Saints' rally as CSS put up three shots in the final 7-minutes of play.
Concordia held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, while the Saints had a 21-17 edge in total shots. CSS also had a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Nemer, Telvin Vah and Tyson Aberle all had three shots for CC. Nemer led all players with three shots on goal.
Cobber keeper Erick Torres came through with four saves to record his second win of the season.
UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off their conference/non-conference weekend when they play at Wis.-Eau Claire on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. The Blugolds are 8-0-0 on the season.
