3-Goal, Second Half Scoring Spree Leads To First Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/08/22)---A trio of goals in the second half propelled Concordia to a 3-0 win over Minn.-Morris in the 2022 home opener.

The game also featured a corn field of firsts. The win was the first of the year for the Cobbers, and the first collegiate victory for head coach. Finally, the third goal of the game was scored by freshman Kayden Aberle which was his first career goal for the Cobbers.   

Concordia (1-2-0) controlled the play throughout the game but didn't get on the board until the fifth minute of the second half. The Cobbers held the majority of the possession in the first half in the Cougar's defensive end of the field. The best chance to score came when Evan Bolinske hit the crossbar in the seventh minute of play.

The Cobbers outshot Morris 7-0 in the first 45 minutes of play, but it wasn't until the first shot of the second half when they were able to find the back of the net. Senior Telvin Vah took a pass from Patrick Smith, collected the ball in the middle of the field 25 yards from goal and dribble diagonally to his left. He was able to get past the Cougar wing defender just inside the penalty area, and then fired a shot on the ground that pinged off the inside of the left post and caromed across the goal and into the right corner of the net.

The goal was Vah's first of the year and the 21st of his career.

Concordia's second goal of the game would come less than 15 minutes later when freshman Gannon Brooks poked home the ball from 5-yards out after Vah took a shot and it caromed off the legs of three Morris players.

Brooks' goal at 64:16 was his second of the season which puts him on top of the CC scoring list.

The final Cobber tally came off of a throw-in with under five minutes remaining in the final half. Aberle took advantage of sophomore Liam Weiler's big throw by getting on the end of the toss and heading it home for his first college strike. The helper was also the first of Weiler's college career.

Concordia finished the game by outshooting Morris 16-2 in total shots and 8-2 in shots on frame. The Cobbers also enjoyed a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Vah and Brooks both had a game-high three totals, while Vah led all players with three shots on goal.

Junior goalie Erick Torres made two saves in goal for CC to record his second career shutout.
