Second-Half Flurry Finishes Cobbers

LINCOLN, Neb. (9/03/22)---Concordia fell 4-2 in a back-and-forth game against Concordia (Tex.).

The game was second of the opening weekend for the Cobbers who fell 3-2 to host Neb. Wesleyan on Friday.

The Cobbers gave up the only goal of the first half and trailed 1-0 at the half against the Tornados – who were picked to win the American Southwest Conference in the preseason coaches' poll.

Concordia (0-2) came out of the halftime break and took a 2-1 lead by scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second period. Senior Patrick Smith tied the game at 1-1 when he hammered home a volley from 20 yards out. Mason Weigel then gave CC a 1-goal lead when he headed home from inside the 6-yard box after senior defender Matthew Nemer played the ball across the face of the goal.

The Cobbers would be done in by a pair of goals just 4:22 apart. The Tornados tied the game at 2-2 with a strike at 74:31. They put up the game-winning goal at 78:53.

The Tornados finished off the scoring with a dead ball shot at the 86:33 mark.

The Cobbers were outshot 19-7 in total shots and 12-2 in shots on goal. The Tornados also had a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.

Weigel led CC with two shots in the game, while goalkeeper Erick Torres made eight saves.          

UP NEXT: Concordia will host its home opener on Thursday, Sept. 6 when they square off against Minn.-Morris at 3:30 p.m.
